A Mother’s Strength: How Your Support Helped Orvaughn Come Home Safely
When nine-year-old Orvaughn was admitted to the hospital this summer with a cystic fibrosis pulmonary exacerbation, his mom, O’Neisha, did what any loving parent would do. She never left his side. For nearly three weeks, she watched over him while he received IV antibiotics, increased respiratory support, and round-the-clock airway clearance. Her only focus was keeping him comfortable, safe, and healing.
But as every CF parent knows, life outside the hospital doesn’t stop when your child is inside it.
During Orvaughn’s hospital stay, O’Neisha was unable to work. On top of that, her car broke down and needed costly repairs. The combination of lost income, essential bills, and sudden expenses left her with an impossible choice: pay the rent or fix the car she needed to bring her son home.
Parents should never have to face decisions like that alone.
When her social worker referred her to Claire’s Place Foundation, she wasn’t sure anyone would understand what she was carrying. But her words reminded us why this work matters so much:
“While this is my first time in this situation, I never would have imagined someone was offering this help with us parents in mind. We give our all for our kids, and at times no one is there to offer support or refill our glass. It was touching to me to discover that you all help parents who have unforeseen hardships due to their children’s illness.”
Because of your generosity, we were able to step in with an Extended Hospital Stay Grant that covered her rent and eased her immediate financial crisis freeing up funds to address her additional expenses. This support gave her the chance to focus solely on caring for Orvaughn, without the fear of coming home to an unstable situation.
Her social worker shared that the family has faced financial and housing insecurities for months, and that any help would make a tremendous difference. Thanks to you, we were able to answer that call.
Claire’s legacy and our mission has always been about love, courage, and lifting others up. We’re grateful to continue that work for families like Orvaughn’s, thanks to supporters like you.
Thank you for showing up for families who need hope and stability at the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
