Matt’s Story: Staying Afloat After a Hospital Stay

When cystic fibrosis interrupts your life, it does not come with warning.

For Matt, that interruption came in the form of a hospitalization this past fall that kept him out of work for weeks.

Like many adults living with CF, Matt works hard to stay independent. He owns his home and manages his responsibilities on his own. But when a health setback forces you to stop working, even temporarily, the financial impact can hit quickly.

That is exactly what happened.

Missing work meant falling behind on bills. To keep up with his mortgage, Matt had to rely on loans, trying to buy time while he recovered and worked to get back on his feet.

But the pressure was building.

That is where Claire’s Place stepped in.

Through our Extended Hospital Stay Grant, we were able to cover one month of Matt’s mortgage, helping him stay in his home while he focused on his health and recovery.

What stands out most is not just the need, but the way Matt talks about the support.

This support has been such a profound blessing to me during an incredibly difficult time,” he shared. “I am truly overwhelmed by your kindness and generosity.

He went on to say something we hear often from the people we serve.

“Words feel so small in comparison to the impact this help has had on my life.”

This is what living with CF can look like, even for adults who are working and doing everything right.

A sudden hospitalization.
Lost income.
Bills that do not pause.

And in that moment, support like this can make all the difference.

It is not just about covering a payment.

It is about stability.
It is about dignity.
It is about giving someone the space to recover without the added weight of losing their home.

This is Claire’s legacy in action.

Showing up in real, practical ways when people need it most.
